Travel Gear
I’m carrying more than the shirt on my back with me. Here is what keeps me running on the road:

REI Mars 80 PackREI Mars 80
I’ve been using this backpack since 2006 and it is still as comfortable as the day I bought it. It’s never broken or ripped. It never gets soaks in a rain storm. REI makes good makes durable packs.
Moleskin Notebooks
I’ve had a Moleskin with me since I started traveling in 2006. I never leave home without one. These notebooks catalog my thoughts, feelings, tips, tricks, and expenses. I’d be lost with my little notepad.
Apple MacBook
Building this website wasn’t easy and keeping it updated is even harder. For all the design, video, and photo needs, I use a Mac. I used to be a PC but once I went Mac, I realized the extra money was worth it.
Nikon S8100
I switched to a Nikon because they have better higher end point and shoots than Canon. I’ve been blown away. The picture quality is amazing and it shoots great at night. Plus, the battery lasts forever. I am a Nikon man now.

Travel Companies
These travel companies offer great deals, have great customer service, and generally kick ass. I use these companies when I travel:

World Nomads – I buy all my travel insurance from World Nomads. They have great customer service, good prices, and good coverage. They are very widely used by travelers.
Lonely Planet – Everyone has their own guidebook preference. Lonely Planet is mine. I like the look of their guides, the organization, and emphasis on budget travel. Plus, they don’t weight a lot. And they just did a major redesign of their books, making them even better now.
REI – I’ve had the same REI backpack for the last 6 years. It’s as good as it was the day I bought it. And because the quality is so great, I recommend REI for getting all your gear. It will last a long time.
G Adventures – My first trip was in 2003 to Costa Rica with G Adventures. That trip turned me into a travel junkie. I’ve done a number of their tours since then too. I like their commitment to the environment, small groups, and mix of free time and scheduled activities. If you take a tour, take it with them.
Momondo – A great flight search engine.
Skyscanner – Another great flight search engine, especially for discount airlines.
Rail Europe – If you are going to Europe for awhile and taking the train, get a rail pass. It will save you money. I’ve used them and saved hundreds of dollars.
STA Travel – A good company for those under 26. They offer good discount airline tickets and discount travel cards.
Hotwire While I normally stay in hostels, if I do stay in a hotel room, I use Hotwire (and sometimes Priceline) to find cheap rooms. I’ve used them to find 90 USD rooms in the middle of Times Square. That’s a great bargain.
Hostelbookers – I use Hostelbookers to book my hostels and guesthouses because they have a large inventory and, unlike Hostelworld, there’s no booking fee.
