We felt so passionately about giving our guests the best possible stay that we decided to build a site where only properties belonging to “Owners Who Care” could be listed. None of us had physically met at that point, and the site developed on a closed forum set up for the purpose.A panel of volunteers was established to vet each application; this is exceptionally thorough as we aim to eliminate guest disappointment totally if possible, although of course we’ve no control over Mother Nature!I’m not here to describe the how-we-do-its as it’s all on our website; essentially, we’re self-regulatory, for as Chris will know, direct-with-owner vacation rentals is one area of the travel industry where consumer protection is virtually non-existent, apart from “supplier failure” guarantees. There is no means in place to protect vacationers from anything less, and as those experienced in making their own vacation arrangements will agree, there is plenty of scope for feeling let down apart from finding the property doesn’t exist! So my post is simply to say how excited I was to read your article this morning Matt, and to thank you for the virtual introduction to Chris Elliott! I’m in the UK (although our owners have properties worldwide) so his name had previously escaped my radar. It was heartwarming to find someone so dedicated to the consumer rights of travellers.Chris, your blog is bookmarked!

I represent a growing group of vacation rental home owners who originally got together via the internet: on a vacation rental forum.
