WHERE CAN YOU TRAVEL ON $50 A DAY?
If you think like most people do, the answer is “nowhere”.
It just seems too good to be true that you can travel across the world on less than it costs to live at home.
My name is Matt Kepnes and I run this website.
I’m also the author of the book How to Travel the World on $50 a Day. I’ve spent the past 8 years traveling to 75 countries, perfecting the magic $50 number. It has held true in Iceland, Thailand, Sweden, and countless others, and now I’m driving and speaking around America to prove that if you can do it here, you can do it anywhere.
That’s $50 for EVERYTHING.
Accommodation, food, excursions, transportation, the works. This approach isn’t about being a cheapskate—it’s about being frugal and finding the best experiences at the lowest prices.
Traveling the world on $50 a day is about a philosophy as much as it is about a specific number.
It’s about bringing your total expenses down to as little as possible while still finding value, having fun, and checking items off your bucket list. My book will teach you how to travel anywhere on the budget. It will help you save your trip, teach you how to avoid wasting money on fees, get free travel, work abroad, and save in any destination you visit. It dispels the myth that travel is expensive and that anyone can make their dream trip come true.
And, so over the next four months, I’ll be driving around the United States, traveling to 22 states, big cities and small ones alike, keeping it under $50 a day to show and share the beauty of travel and get folks like you traveling more.
I want you to join me on this journey with suggestions, inspiration, photos and at the very least, well wishes. Anyone can follow along with my journey on my blogs here on this page and on the hashtag #fiftyaday.

WHAT I’LL BE DOING
I’ll be driving around the country and while I do so, I’ll be doing some great stuff along the way:
- Recording how to enjoy each major city on $50 a day – both by video and on the blog!
- Using Couchsurfing.com or Airbnb for accommodation.
- Taking rideshares to split costs.
- Picking up travel companions along the way.
- Showing people how to eat on a budget (without surviving on pasta!).
- And, of course, hosting meet-ups with everyone around the country!
Want to be involved, host a meet-up when I’m in your city, offer me a couch, or share a ride somewhere? E-mail me at [email protected] with the subject line “Book Tour!”
